The best iPhone for photography

The iPhone 13 Pro/Max, ideal for photography

It should come as no surprise to anyone that the iPhones released in September 2021 capture better photos and videos than those launched the year before. And, unsurprisingly, when the iPhone 14 is released, it will probably be of a better ilk.

There are marked differences between the standard iPhone 13 and its Pro iterations, with photography being the most important.

The Pro has a third sensor with a telephoto lens, in addition to the standard wide-angle and ultra-wide angle lenses. Its zoom has been increased to 3x, compared to 2x for the iPhone 12 Pro, which produces a better telephoto effect for taking more natural portrait photos.

The wide-angle camera has both a larger sensor and a wider aperture (f/1.5 vs. f/1.6), which means great low-light performance and a nice dynamic range, as well as a more natural depth of field.

As for the ultra wide angle, its aperture has been improved (f/1.8 vs. f/2.4 for its predecessor), making it perform better in low light. It also has a much shorter minimum focusing distance of just 2 centimetres, making it easy to take great macro shots.

As always, the iPhone 13 Pro supports the new ProRAW image format, which is not the case with the standard, and it also supports ProRes video.

Not many users are interested in this particular format, but if you shoot and edit video on a regular basis, it can be useful.

Unlike the iPhone 12 Pro and Pro Max, the 13 Pro and Pro Max have the same capabilities, so your buying decision depends on which size you prefer.

The Pluses:

A larger, more powerful wide-angle camera sensor

Improved telephoto lens

Superior ultra-wide angle sensor with Macro mode support.

The Minus:

High price

If the iPhone 13 Pro Max is the best iOS camera today, its successor, the upcoming iPhone 14 Pro Max, could soon take its place. With a release date of September 2022, it’s expected to feature an unprecedented photo setup.

Can’t afford an iPhone 13 Pro right now? You can turn to the iPhone 12 Pro, which is very powerful and a little cheaper, it is available at retailers (Amazon,..).

Alternatively, you could simply wait for the launch of the fourteenth generation before turning to the 13, which will certainly benefit from a price drop.
